was born in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. His father was a carpenter from Barbados and his mother was from Sierra Leone. Calendar attended several primary schools, including Bishop Edwin Tabernacle. He never completed his secondary education, either because he did not want to do so or because his father died when he was young and his mother could no longer afford to allow him to go. Regardless, Calendar became an apprentice carpenter with the Freetown Public Works Department in 1927 Three years later Calendar completed his training Leaving municipal service Calendar found work with Pa Alimamy Boungie an undertaker and coffin maker who ran his business on Kissy Street in Freetown Calendar began his musical career there During the day he made coffins and he sang at wakes at the behest of Boungie Around the same time in the early 1930s Calendar also started to play with ...
