was raised in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia and is the daughter of Harvey Welker, an engineer, and his wife Julie (Talmadge), a realtor and a former politician. From a young age, she was interested in news, and admired women journalists like Andrea Mitchell and Barbara Walters. Watching her mother run twice for the city council sparked Kristen’s interest in politics; one of her career goals was to become a political reporter.

Kristen Welker attended Philadelphia’s Germantown Friends School, where she wrote for The Earthquake, the school’s newspaper. After graduating from high school in 1994, she attended Harvard University and worked on the Harvard Crimson. In her junior year she got her first professional experience, when she worked as an intern with NBC’s Today Show. Welker graduated from Harvard in 1998 with a B.A. in History.
