Muhammad, clergyperson and Islamic leader and organizer, was one of eight children born to Elijah Poole (later Elijah Muhammad) and Clara Poole (later Clara Muhammad) in Detroit, Michigan. Muhammad was born less than a year before his father, Elijah Muhammad, assumed leadership of the Nation of Islam (NOI) upon the disappearance of its founder, Fard Muhammad The Nation of Islam while claiming to be Islamic and teaching high standards of personal behavior and ethics was clearly at odds with traditional Islam Sunni or Shiite Its teachings included that Fard Muhammad was God or Allah who was corporeal rather than spiritual in nature Elijah Muhammad was the Messenger of Allah whose divine appointment involved the resurrection of blacks from ignorance of their true selves blacks or the so called Negroes were the Original People from whom an evil scientist or devil had extracted an ...
