Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Photo Essay
This photo series takes a look at an assortment of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). An HBCU, according to the Higher Education Act of 1965 , is "any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association. " Many HBCUs were founded following the Civil War when former slaves lobbied for educational funding and the creation of black schools. Today HBCUs boast eminent graduates in a wide array of fields, including politics, entertainment, and aerospace.
