New Photo Essay
November 18, 2020
This month the African American Studies Center added the photo essay, "When We See Us: Images from a Black Lives Matter Protest" by Charles Lee and Joseph Griffin, DrPH(c), MPH to the site.
This essay is informed by the authors' backgrounds as artists, scholars, and most importantly, Black men working to center the voices of their community in their respective fields. Their work explores aspects of identity, culture, and history to unearth layers of perceived and personal identities, histories and geographies. Together, they developed a series of captions that both describe the photos, explore the underlying meaning behind each and reflect the author’s personal experiences.
