Sudanese poet, critic, and academician, was born in Ad Damer on 1 January 1944, after which he moved across Sudan with his family. His father was Abdul-Hayy Mahmoud, an architect who studied country planning in Britain. His mother, Aziza Ismaeel Fawzy, was a daughter of an architect as well. Abdul-Hayy married Dr. Aisha Moussa and had four children. He graduated from Khartoum University and obtained his PhD in comparative literature from Oxford University. He published many important volumes of poetry and produced many books and critical essays in both Arabic and English. In the 1970s he held some cultural and academic posts. For his last nine years, a series of ailments caused his health to decline and his linguistic memory to die until he was completely paralyzed. Egyptian Muslim mathematician, also known as al-Hasib al-Misri, the Egyptian Calculator (or Reckoner). His full name was Abu Kamil Shujaʿ ibn Aslam ibn Muhammad ibn Shuja. Very few biographical details are known concerning Abu Kamil, but his productive peak appears to have been at the end of the ninth century. The year of his birth and the year of his death are known with a decent degree of certainty as he is known to have died before al-Imrani (who died in 955) but to have lived well beyond al-Khwarizmi (who died in 850). The problematic of African aesthetics is a modern era phenomenon unknown in its most brutal sense prior to the coming of the Europeans to the African coasts. The traditions of the African aesthetic in the West have been discontinuous, corrupted, and distorted (Asante). Western writing inscribed the African world and worldview not only using western sensibilities and paradigms but also configured Africa within the “rhetoric of parataxis … an expression, a symbol of physical natural apartness and the sign of difference itself” (Abubakar, pp. 843–846). Overview. “African Studies” is a broad term. It is understood here as the systematic study of African civilizations. The earliest documents originate from antiquity (Egypt, Greece, and the Roman Empire). Islamization of Northern Africa and the emerging trading connections between the Middle East and East Africa from the seventh century on brought about large quantities of geographical, religious, and ethnographic accounts by Muslim scholars. European penetration of the continent from the sixteenth century onward also resulted in numerous linguistic, ethnographic and historical descriptions. In the wake of colonial studies modern African Studies emerged, among them African linguistics (“africanistics”), ethnology, and archaeology.

A school in Colwyn Bay, North Wales, c.1893–1912, whose students came from Africa and the diaspora. The Baptist missionary William Hughes developed the concept of a school in Britain where the education of Africans, including carpentry, printing, pharmacy, and tailoring, could be taught by local craftsmen. Five thousand copies of his Dark Africa: And the Way Out were printed in 1892, and distributed at Christian gatherings. Hughes went to Africa in 1893 to recruit, and there were a dozen students (from Angola to Sierra Leone) at the Institute (originally called the Colwyn Bay Institute) in 1895.
Later students included people from America, South Africa, Nigeria, and Zambia. Altogether, 100 students studied at Colwyn Bay (four are buried there), but Hughes was too busy to keep proper accounts. Financial support evaporated in 1912 and Hughes died in 1924.
Having journeyed to the Americas, Africans, like any other peoples, were not able to transpose wholesale their homeland institutions to new environments. Furthermore, they had been dragged out of Africa under conditions which denied them the transport of their material artifacts, the comfort of family and community, and the stability of customary systems of governance. What they did bring was contained in their minds and motor skills: the capacity for memory, cogitation, problem solving, adaptation, aesthetic judgment, and spiritual transcendence, together with the kinetic routines which accompanied work, leisure, speech, ritual, and artistic creation. The transplantation of Africans to familiar temperature zones across the Atlantic served as an important factor in facilitating their adjustment to new ecological environments.
