Her parents deeply valued education and public service, and instilled those values in their daughters. Taylor's grandfather, Robert Robinson Taylor, graduated from MIT with a degree in architecture and design, and was vice president of Tuskegee Institute, a historic black college. Her father, Robert Rochon Taylor, a Chicago businessman, became the first African American to chair the Chicago Housing Authority. He focused his daughter Barbara and her older sister, Lauranita, on the need for quality public housing. Bowman's mother, trained as a teacher, was engaged in civic work, including a community arts center and child welfare programs.
