Michael Mitchell

was born in Tres Corações, Minas Gerais, Brazil, the eldest of three brothers. His family moved to the state of São Paulo, where his father sought work in Brazil’s automobile industry. The male figures in his life served as role models and inspirations for pursuing his scholarly ambitions after the family resettled in São Paulo.

Silva is known for his sustained advocacy and leadership on behalf of black citizens in Brazil. He has created or participated actively in a number of organizations designed to fight racial discrimination and promote the greater presence of blacks in Brazilian society.
