Barry Kernfeld

jazz string bassist and trombonist, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Details of his parents, including their names, are unknown. His nickname was Johnny, and his surname has often (and probably incorrectly) been spelled Lindsey. As a boy he played string bass with his family; his father played guitar and his brother Herb played violin. While John was in his teens, the three men performed with the cornetist Freddie Keppard at the Hanan Saloon in the Storyville district of New Orleans.

Lindsay was a member of the songwriter and pianist Clarence Williams's group in 1916. From 1917 to 1918 he served in the army. On his return he took up trombone, working for a few months at the Lyric Theatre with John Robichaux around 1920.
