Peter C. Murray

Methodist bishop, was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, to Dr. J. W. Golden and Mary Tyson. Both his father and a grandfather were Methodist ministers. Charles attended the precollegiate program at Rust College in Holly Springs, received his AB degree from Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia, and received a master of sacred theology degree from Boston University in 1938. He was ordained a deacon in the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1936 and was ordained an elder in 1938. He married Ida Elizabeth Smith on 24 May 1937, and their marriage lasted until his death.

While serving as pastor of Wesley Methodist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, between 1938 and 1942, Golden was also professor of religion at Philander Smith College, one of twelve black colleges supported by the Methodist Church.
