Paul Wermager

physician and radiologist, was born Albert Chandler Johnston Jr. in Chicago, Illinois, to Albert Chandler Johnston Sr. His mother's name is unknown. Nothing is known about his childhood or early schooling. It appears that he grew up with several brothers and that one of his brothers passed for white. Johnston married Thyra Baumann from Boston, and the couple had four children.

Johnston attended the University of Chicago from 1919 to 1923, graduating with a bachelor of science degree. While there he joined the black fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi. Johnston then studied at Rush Medical College in Chicago, where he was one of two black students in his class. He received his medical degree from Rush in 1925.
