Chana Piekarski

was born Joseph Henry Peter Westbrook in Hernando Mississippi. He graduated from Fisk College and then, in 1904, from Meharry Medical College located in Nashville. After graduation, he opened Allen Drug Store in Mississippi. He moved to Denver in 1906 and opened a medical practice there.

In 1909 he joined the founding team of a Black agrarian community. At the inaugural meeting on 12 June 1909, he gave the community the name Dearfield as it “will be very dear to us.” On 26 March 1910 he became a grand chancellor of a lodge of the Knights of Pythias, a fraternity that cherishes honor and respect for all humans. Around this time he married Laura A. Westbrook. The marriage lasted for five years (exact date of divorce is unknown).
