Caryn E. Neumann

has disclosed very little about his early life. He sang in a youth choir in the 1950s and 1960s before joining a doo-wop group, the Six Fifths, during high school in Yonkers, New York. Mooney left New York to hitchhike around the world in the late 1960s.

In Paris, Mooney met the four German members of Can, which would become one of the most influential bands in Krautrock. This musical genre emerged from Germany’s intellectual branch of the counterculture. Krautrock bands abandoned traditional song structure, downplayed lead guitar, and downplayed lead vocals to create the effect of an orchestra instead of a band. Trying to blur the line between man and machine, Krautrock groups emphasized electronic instruments like drum machines and synthesizers.
